World champions Great Britain qualified fastest in the women’s team pursuit on day one of the Track World Cup in London.

Olympic champions Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell – on her 26th birthday – were returning to the Olympic Velodrome in Great Britain kit for the first time since winning gold at London 2012.

The pair were joined by Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker in the four-rider, four-kilometre team pursuit in a combination which won the World Championships in Colombia in February.

And, in front of a small audience at the renamed Lee Valley VeloPark, the quartet advanced to the semi-finals in four minutes 23.406 seconds to set up a semi-final with fourth-fastest qualifiers the United States, who clocked 4mins 32.523secs.

Second fastest qualifiers Australia (4:23.498) will meet third-fastest qualifiers Canada (4:28.208) in the second semi-final.

The medals will be decided this evening.

The fact three rides are in close proximity means Ciara Horne is likely to switch in for the semi-final.
