Broady progresses as top seed crashes out

Great Britain’s Naomi Broady is through to the second round of the BMW Malaysian Open after seeing off Klara Koukalova in three sets on Tuesday.

Broady dug deep to beat her Czech opponent 6-3 3-6 6-3 and set up a second-round clash with qualifier Zhaoxuan Yang, who overcame eighth seed Saisai Zheng 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Meanwhile world number 153 Kai-Chen Chang stunned number one seed Roberta Vinci, recording a 5-7 6-2 6-1 victory over the Italian.

Fourth seed Annika Beck bowed out after she was beaten 7-5 6-3 by Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, while Lin Zhu booked her spot in the second round after overcoming Alexandra Panova 6-4 6-4.

It took second seed Elina Svitolina just over 47 minutes to defeat qualifier Miyu Kato 6-1 6-1, while Japan’s Risa Ozaki beat Elizaveta Kulichkova 6-0 6-2 in 68 minutes.

Cagla Buyukakcay recorded a 7-5 6-1 win over Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the day’s other singles match.
