Jenson Button will miss qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix as his McLaren team continue to suffer reliability woes.

Honda brought an updated power unit to Montreal in the hope of increasing reliability for the team – who only scored their first points of the season last time out in Monaco.

McLaren have struggled to compete even with the midfield pack this year and Button’s team-mate Fernando Alonso has retired from the previous two races.

Button failed to start in Bahrain and, despite the improvements implemented by Honda, Button stopped out on track towards the end of final practice, with the team confirming he will not be able to run in the qualifying session.

“JB’s car suffered ERS-related failure towards the end of FP3. Our engineers are looking at data, but sadly his car won’t be ready for quali,” they tweeted.

Alonso had already had an engine change on Saturday morning and was only able to run the final 10 minutes of third practice, although his running was cut short as Button’s issue brought out the second red flag of the session following an earlier crash by Felipe Nasr.

With both cars struggling in second practice on Friday afternoon, their maiden points-scoring race in Monaco looks like being a false dawn for their progress.
