Karen Carney believes England’s collective team spirit will prove key as they look to secure a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

The Lionesses will head to Montreal for Tuesday’s final Group F clash against Colombia on a high following the 2-1 victory over Mexico at the Moncton Stadium in New Brunswick, albeit following a nervous few minutes after conceding a stoppage-time goal.

Head coach Mark Sampson had made plenty of positive changes following the disappointment of an opening defeat to France, which proved key as 21-year-old Reading forward Fran Kirby produced an excellent finish to break the deadlock on 71 minutes and then substitute Carney headed in a second.

Birmingham City captain Carney has battled her way back into the national team following injury and believes such a healthy competition for a place in the starting XI can only bode well for hopes of making an impact on the latter stages.

“The team did really well and dealt with the pressure. We dug deep when we needed to and got the result, now we are really excited to play Colombia,” Carney said on

“The competition is healthy. We are all supporting each other and are all behind each other as we will be against Colombia.”

England had started Saturday bottom of Group F but are now second behind Colombia, who recorded a somewhat unexpected 2-0 victory over Les Bleues in the earlier kick-off, both matches being held in the same stadium.

With the top two qualifying automatically, along with the four best third-placed teams, Sampson knows just what was on the line and believes England can emerge stronger from it.

“The players had to handle that extra pressure of knowing a loss would have meant England going home. It was great for the players to experience that, and they delivered,” he said.

“It was a huge positive for us because we are going to have to handle pressure in this tournament.”
