Charley Hull’s hopes of a second successive title challenge at the ANA Inspiration appear over going into Sunday’s final round.

The 21-year-old, from Kettering, finished second last year after champion Lydia Ko birdied the final hole, but a repeat looks unlikely as she sits eight shots off the lead with 18 holes to play.

Hull’s round of 71 on Saturday, one under par, leaves her on five under and with seemingly too much to do to climb through a congested field, led by America’s Lexi Thompson.

Thompson, who was one of 56 players that had to complete their second round on Saturday, fired six birdies and a solitary bogey in her impressive five-under-par 67.

That gives her a two-shot lead over Suzanne Pettersen, who went round in 68, and the Norwegian will be eyeing a third major, but first at Rancho Mirage.

South Korean trio Mi Jung Hur, whose round of 65 was the best of the day, Inbee Park and So Yeo Ryu are all on 10 under along with Australian Minjee Lee.
