Dan Evans has been given the nod for Great Britain’s Davis Cup clash with Japan in his home city of Birmingham.

Evans and Kyle Edmund had both been named in an initial five-man squad for the tie at the Barclaycard Arena, with captain Leon Smith required to trim that to four ahead of Thursday afternoon’s draw.

Edmund is significantly higher ranked but was forced to cut short his practice on Wednesday because of a back niggle.

The 21-year-old declared himself optimistic of being fit but was conspicuous by his absence on Thursday as Evans practised with Andy Murray, and it is the world number 157 who will take on Kei Nishikori on Friday.

Murray will face Japan number two Taro Daniel and could partner brother Jamie in the doubles on Saturday, with Dom Inglot included in the team as back-up for what is likely to be a crucial rubber.
