Novak Djokovic required just 61 minutes to reach the Qatar ExxonMobil Open quarter-finals.

The world number one dropped a mere three games in comprehensively overcoming Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2 6-1 in Doha.

Djokovic will face Ivo Karlovic at the quarter-final juncture after the big serving Croat came through his second round encounter with Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6 (7/3) 6-3.

Djokovic said of his next opponent on the ATP’s official website: “The key is to try to get as many returns back in play.

“Also there will probably be some games where he’s going to serve two, three aces.

“I have to accept that, but these particular matches, when you play somebody that serves that well, one of the best all-time servers in tennis history, then you just need to wait and be patient.”

Fourth-seed David Ferrer may await the winner in the semi-finals, after the Spaniard dispatched countryman Fernando Verdasco 6-3 6-2 to secure a quarter-final with Dustin Brown.

Elsewhere on Thursday, third-seed Tomas Berdych faces Richard Gasquet and Andreas Seppi will take on Ivan Dodig, who overcame Michael Berrer – the man who ended Rafael Nadal’s challenge in the first round.
