England lost the toss and were asked to bat first under cloudy skies in the first Test against South Africa.

That means an early examination for debutant Alex Hales, who becomes Alastair Cook’s eighth opening partner since the retirement of Andrew Strauss.

Play was delayed by half an hour following morning rain in Durban, with conditions looking inviting for seam bowling.

With James Anderson out injured, England recalled Chris Woakes for the first time since August 2014, while the hosts included spinner Dane Piedt ahead of paceman Kagiso Rabada.
