Stuart Pearce’s reign as Nottingham Forest manager is over after being sacked by the Sky Bet Championship club.

The 52-year-old returned to the City Ground, where he enjoyed considerable success as a player, in the summer and was expected to mount a promotion challenge.

However, despite a promising start to the season following a hefty summer spending spree, it has been a disappointing campaign and Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Millwall was their sixth defeat in seven matches and left them with just one win in 11.

And after meeting with owner Fawaz Al Hasaw i on Sunday afternoon, Pearce has been relieved of his role, but has been offered an alternative position with Forest.

A club statement read: “After long discussions between owner and chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi and manager Stuart Pearce, the club has decided that Stuart will be relieved of his role as manager with immediate effect.

“Mr Al Hasawi has offered Stuart an alternative role at the club, which he is currently considering.

“The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

Pearce was appointed as Billy Davies’ successor towards the end of last season, but did not take up his role until the summer.

The ex-Manchester City boss becomes the sixth manager to be sacked by Al Hasawi, who will now turn his attention to selecting a new man to ensure Forest do not get sucked into a relegation fight.

Former Dynamo Moscow manager Dan Petrescu has been linked with the position, while Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough, who also played for Forest with distinction, is also an early favourite for the role.

Clough’s former team-mate Stan Collymore, who spent two years at the City Ground in the 1990s, believes somebody with a Forest connection should get the job and has offered to help Al Hasawi find the right man.

He tweeted: “Gutted for Forest. Absolutely gutted. Stick with the Forest people philosophy though, it WILL work. #NFFC

“Dear @fawaz_alhasawi1 , please contact me. I have names and ideas that WILL help YOUR football club. No BS, want to help you!

“#NFFC needs a coherent strategy . I’ll give the boss man names and ideas for free. Time for the club to kick on. I helped once, will again.”
