Carl Froch has moved to quash rumours of retirement despite a delay in his next fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr due to an elbow injury.

The 37-year-old was set to return to the ring against Chavez in Las Vegas in March but the fight will now not take place until summer at the earliest.

Froch had sparked rumours of retirement on Sunday when he posted a picture of a pair of hanging boxing gloves on social media, writing: “Something nice about this picture…”

But Froch confirmed in a statement on Monday: “I will get some treatment and then we will look to make this fight or another big fight in the early summer.

“I’m disappointed to have to let this opportunity go but at this stage in my career I have to make every fight count.”

Froch has not fought since he successfully defended his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles over George Groves at Wembley in May.

Talks were at an advanced stage for a clash with Chavez, which Froch favoured due to his long-held desire to fight in Nevada before the end of his career.

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: “We have been deep in negotiations for some time and we were almost ready to go.

“Carl has gone into fights before not 100 per cent fit and paid the price and he has made the right decision to hang fire. We will have a meeting early next week and plan out 2015. I’m confident we will see him back in the ring this summer.”
