Chris Froome admits a painful Tour de France exit last year has made him hungrier than ever to regain the yellow jersey he won in 2013.

The Team Sky rider began the 2014 race as defending champion but was forced to pull out at stage five after his third crash in two days.

The 29-year-old Briton claims he is using disappointment as motivation to come back even stronger.

“That certainly makes me more determined to come back and win it again,” Froome told Press Association Sport.

“It makes me that much more eager this year to get stuck into it.

“I don’t want to say it’s about making right for the last year but I definitely have an extra hunger because of what happened.”

Froome, who also finished runner-up to Bradley Wiggins in 2012, added: “We’re all starting from scratch now and thinking that this is the goal, this is what we’re going to achieve this year.

“And with the team we have I think we are on the right path to do that.”
