James Guy posted a new British record in qualifying for the final of the 400 metres freestyle at the World Championships in Doha but there was an injury setback for Fran Halsall.

Guy, 19, touched home in 3:39.58 minutes to beat the standard of 3:40.22 that Scotland’s Robbie Renwick set back in 2008.

Southport’s freestyle and butterfly specialist Halsall, however, was withdrawn from the championships on Friday morning due to concern over a shoulder issue.

Britain were already missing Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ross Murdoch because of a chest infection.

Elsewhere, Adam Barrett matched the jointly-held British record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 22.87 seconds to equal the achievements of Mark Foster and Antony James.

He will now compete in the semi-finals, while fifth-fastest Chris Walker-Hebborn secured a place in the 50m backstroke semi-finals.

After winning silver in the 800m freestyle Jazz Carlin reached Friday night’s 400m freestyle final, but Adam Peaty and Sophie Taylor missed respective chances to progress in the 200m and 100m breaststroke events.
