Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets on his final day of testing ahead of the Formula One season but was left underwhelmed.

The world champion again showed the advantage Mercedes appear to have over their rivals, with his quickest time of one minute 23.022 seconds in Barcelona coming on less favourable tyres.

But he could not match his team-mate Nico Rosberg, who was more than 0.2secs faster on Friday at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Hamilton said: “It wasn’t a particularly spectacular day. The track seems to have lost a bit of grip in the last few days so the feeling wasn’t as good. But I’m still glad we got some running done and I feel good in the car.

“We were trying to understand a few things today with the set up and it gave us a clearer indication of that in the afternoon. The guys in the team have been exceptional during these tests and I just can’t wait to get racing now.”

Rosberg will take over driving duties again on Sunday as testing draws to a close ahead of the opening race in Australia on March 15.

Williams’ Felipe Massa finished the day second fastest, 0.24secs behind Hamilton and just ahead of Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari.

It was another day of disappointment for McLaren, with Kevin Magnussen’s day ending almost three hours early due to an oil leak.

The Dane was standing in for Fernando Alonso following his heavy crash last weekend but managed only 39 laps.
