Lewis Hamilton survived a spin in final practice ahead of Spanish Grand Prix qualifying – but he could only set the third fastest time.

It was Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg who set the pace with a quickest lap of one minute 26.021 seconds, with the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel also faster than Hamilton.

The Williams of Valtteri Bottas was fourth with the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen the only other man to get within a second of Rosberg’s effort.

Hamilton spun at turn three, the same part of Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya where McLaren’s Fernando Alonso suffered a concussion after a crash in pre-season testing.

Unlike the Spaniard, reigning world champion Hamilton managed to avoid hitting the wall – but he could not oust his team-mate from the top of the timesheet.

Rosberg has now been quicker in two of the practice sessions this weekend, with Hamilton setting the pace in Friday’s afternoon run.

Daniel Ricciardo had endured technical difficulties on Friday and would have been pleased to put his Red Bull sixth.

The second Williams of Felipe Massa was seventh with the Toro Rosso pair of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz sandwiching Daniil Kvyat’s Red Bull to round out the top 10.

Jenson Button had gone seventh-quickest on Friday afternoon for McLaren but could only manage 11th, with team-mate and home favourite Fernando Alonso down in 14th.

Nico Hulkenberg was 12th for Force India with the Sauber of Felipe Nasr also quicker than Alonso, who was ahead of the Lotus duo of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.

Marcus Ericsson put his Sauber 17th, with Sergio Perez a disappointing 18th – almost a second slower than team-mate Hulkenberg.

The Manor pair of Will Stevens and Roberto Mehri again occupied the bottom of the timing screens, with Stevens getting the better of the Spaniard across all three sessions.
