England batsman Haseeb Hameed has retired hurt during his maiden first-class appearance of the season.

The 20-year-old, who made an impressive start to his England career during the winter tour of India before injury struck, withdrew after facing 23 balls in Lancashire’s game with Cambridge MCCU on Sunday.

Lancashire tweeted: “Hameed has retired hurt with @LancsCCC 17/0. Liam Livingstone joins Davies at the crease for the visitors.”

Hameed scored 219 runs in three Tests against India before a finger injury forced him out of the final match of the series.

He scored an unbeaten 59 from 156 deliveries while batting with a broken finger during the third Test in Mohali, while sinus surgery saw his miss the Champion County match in Abu Dhabi in March.
