British number two Heather Watson made a welcome return to form with victory in the first round of the Monterrey Open in Mexico.

Watson, who has slumped to 84 in the world after a poor start to the new year, beat Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-4 6-7 (0/7) 6-3 to advance.

The 23-year-old is currently without a coach after ending her temporary link with Judy Murray, and lost in the first rounds of both the Australian Open and the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

But she was too strong for Doi, currently ranked 30 places higher in the rankings, breaking her opponent twice in the opening set and twice again in the decider to advance.
