Jos Buttler will miss England’s NatWest Twenty20 international against New Zealand because of his hand injury.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was replaced in England’s Royal London Series decider against the Kiwis at Chester-le-Street by Jonny Bairstow, after splitting the webbing on his left hand in practice.

The England and Wales Cricket Board subsequently announced on Twitter that Buttler will also be absent from Tuesday’s one-off Twenty20 at Old Trafford.

“Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the NatWest IT20 against New Zealand with the hand injury that forced him to miss the current ODI,” the ECB tweet read.

Bairstow is an obvious option to be added to the squad for Manchester too, but that decision is yet to be made.

The ECB has also clarified that Buttler’s participation in this summer’s Ashes, starting on July 8, is in no doubt.

The governing body added: “A decision on a replacement for the T20 will be made following today’s ODI.

“There are no concerns regarding Buttler’s availability for the Investec Ashes.”
