The Kansas City Royals are returning to the World Series after wrapping up the American League Championship Series with a gripping 4-3 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays in game six.

Kansas secured their second successive American League pennant and will hope to go one step further than they managed in 2014 when they meet the New York Mets.

Home runs from Ben Zobrist in the first and Mike Moustakas – after a review – in the second gave the Royals a dream start in Missouri but Jose Bautista responded with a homer of his own in the fourth.

An RBI single from Alex Rios stretched Kansas’ advantage to two points in the seventh but, again, Bautista responded, this time with a two-run homer to tie the game.

A rain delay then took the teams off the field with the game – and the series – in the balance, but it was the hosts who forced the winning run.

Eric Hosmer’s RBI single allowed Lorenzo Cain to get home in the eighth, and pitcher Wade Davis closed out the ninth inning to give the Royals another chance at winning a first World Series since 1985.

Kansas will have home advantage in game one, which takes place on Tuesday.
