Lennox Lewis has been told by Floyd Mayweather ahead of his superfight against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas that he “hates” boxing.

Lewis chatted to Mayweather during the fighters’ meeting at the MGM Grand on Thursday and sensed that the unbeaten American is suffering from the “jitters”, although he insists this is in keeping with his character.

Mayweather stands to earn £100million from his epic welterweight showdown against Pacquiao and has already stated publicly that now he only fights to secure the financial future of his children.

“Both of them look ready. Floyd looks a bit nervous, but that’s Floyd. He’s emotional – it was just pre-fight jitters. He had a lot to say,” Lewis said.

“He said he hates boxing, but don’t take him seriously. I said to him ‘you can’t hate boxing too much if you’re making US dollars 200million’.

“He was philosophising, talking about his life, how boxing has been good to him and how his businesses have been profitable.”

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Lewis believes Mayweather’s ring-craft will outwit Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“I like Floyd because he hasn’t lost, he’s the bigger man and he’s hard to figure out. He has movement that nobody can figure out,” Lewis said.

“I’m not sure if Manny can figure it out because nobody can. Part of boxing is ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’.

“I believe this is the perfect match-up because they have two separate styles.

“Pacquiao wants to impose his will on you, while Mayweather is a counter-puncher who doesn’t like to get hit too much.

“Pacquiao likes to throw a lot of punches, so the punch count will be high.”
