Liverpool midfielder Emre Can faces an anxious wait to discover the extent of an ankle injury sustained in their thrilling Europa League quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund.

The Germany international was forced off 10 minutes from time despite trying to play on after twisting his right ankle in a frantic goalmouth scramble.

He left the ground on crutches and wearing a protective boot and is scheduled to undergo a scan on Friday morning as the whole squad will attend the 27th anniversary Hillsborough Memorial Service – the last to be held at Anfield – in the afternoon.

The 22-year-old is not available for Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth as he is serving the final game of a two-match suspension but already he is a major doubt for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at home to Everton and could be out for longer if the results of the scan – likely to be available on Saturday morning – show something more serious.
