Three-time champion Martin Adams is out of the BDO World Professional Darts Championships after an opening defeat to Canada’s Jeff Smith at Lakeside on Tuesday.

The 59-year-old Englishman won the title in 2007, 2010 and 2011, but 2015 semi-finalist Smith was the victor in a clinical display.

Adams, the number two seed behind Glen Durrant, had received a bye to the round of 32, but was beaten 3-0 by Smith.

“I’m a little bit disappointed for the fans who would have loved to have seen me win, but every so often you get one of these first-round games where you go out,” Adams told BBC Sport.

“Never mind – it’s not the first time it’s happened.

“Jeff could go on and win it. If he carries on playing like that, he’s going to be in the mix at the end.”
