Moeen Ali has been given the first opportunity to make an impression at the top of the order after he was selected ahead of Alex Hales for England’s tour opener against Pakistan A in Sharjah.

The Worcestershire all-rounder, who batted at eight in the Ashes, is vying with Hales to partner captain Alastair Cook as opener for the forthcoming three-Test tour in the United Arab Emirates.

And he has been given the nod to stake his claim in the two-day tour match, with Jonny Bairstow keeping his place at five, despite stiff competition from James Taylor.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, as expected, has also been selected while Mark Wood has edged out fellow paceman Steven Finn.

England found themselves, surprisingly, up against Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq in this first match.

Misbah was not published in the selected squad initially by Pakistan A, but was drafted in at the last minute to lead the team instead of Junaid Khan.

The left-arm seamer, one of three Test squad members in the A team for this week’s two fixtures, was therefore able to concentrate on his bowling duties – and took the new ball after England chose to bat first.
