Shaun Murphy left Joe Perry with a mountain to climb as their World Championship second-round clash got under way on Sunday morning.

The 2005 world champion from Harlow began well as he claimed the first frame of the day before world number nine Perry struck back to level matters and the former impressed with a century break to take the third.

Murphy, nicknamed the Magician, hit his highest score of the championship so far with a 121 to go 2-1 ahead before recording wins in the following five frames against his compatriot to go 7-1 ahead for the session, leaving Perry eyeing a difficult comeback when play resumes on Sunday evening.

On table two, Judd Trump led Marco Fu 5-3 as their last-16 match began .

The 25-year-old from Bristol, who was runner-up here in 2011, fought back after losing the first frame to claim the next four in succession to take a comfortable 4-1 advantage.

Hong Kong’s Fu impressed with a century break of 120 in the sixth to reduce the margin, but the last two frames were split with Trump maintaining his three-frame lead before Fu sealed the final frame of the session.
