Andy Murray has moved up to third place in the world rankings at Rafael Nadal’s expense.

Nadal lost his first semi-final on clay for 12 years this weekend as Fabio Fognini saw off the Spaniard to book his place in the final of the Rio Open – which he lost to David Ferrer – as he dropped down a spot to fourth in the world rankings.

British number one Murray was last in action when he crashed out of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam 10 days ago in a defeat to Gilles Simon at the quarter-final stage – his first tournament since losing to world number one Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final last month.

The 27-year-old Scot is in the draw for this week’s Dubai Duty Free Championships where he is seeded third and takes on Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller in the first round.
