Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open following a 1-6 6-3 6-4 defeat by German qualifier Michael Berrer.

The defending champion and world number three, playing his first match since undergoing appendix surgery in November, was dumped out of the tournament in Doha before the quarter-final stage for the first time.

Serving for the match, Berrer defended three break points and needed two match points to claim the biggest scalp of his career.

Serbia’s world number one Novak Djokovic enjoyed a successful debut in the tournament by defeating countryman Dusan Lajovic 6-2 6-1.

Djokovic faces Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round, while number three seed Tomas Berdych dispatched Denis Istomin 6-1 6-4.

Fourth seed David Ferrer made hard work of his first-round match, eventually beating Dutch qualifier Thiemo de Bakker 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 6-3, while there were also wins for eighth seed Leonardo Mayer and former world number eight Mikhail Youzhny.
