Nico Rosberg will hold a slight advantage over Lewis Hamilton heading into qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix after he topped the timesheets in final practice.

Rosberg, also fastest in Friday’s second session, posted a best lap time of one minute and 21.083 seconds at the newly-revamped Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Hamilton, who became the first British driver to successfully defend his Formula One crown in Austin last Sunday, was just 0.014 sec adrift of his Mercedes team-mate.

Red Bull appear to be strong upon the sport’s return to Mexico with Daniel Ricciardo third just 0.118 sec slower than Rosberg. Sebastian Vettel was fourth for Ferrari with Daniil Kvyat in the sister Red Bull, fifth – half-a-second off the pace.

Formula One is back in Mexico City for the first time since 1992, but the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez venue has changed significantly since the sport’s last visit here.

Most notably, the hell-raising Peraltada turn – deemed too dangerous by modern Formula One safety standards – has been replaced by a slower, stadium section.

And it is here where the patriotic crowd have cheered on Sergio Perez, the only Mexican driver on the grid.

They will have been buoyed by seeing their man finish final practice sixth, just 0.520 sec slower than Rosberg’s Mercedes.

For Jenson Button there was more misery in what has been a painful year. The McLaren driver, who has already been hit with a 50-place grid penalty due to Formula One’s complicated engine rules, was consigned to the garage for much of the practice session with an electrical issue.

Indeed the 2009 world champion managed to complete only four laps and propped up the order.

Valtteri Bottas was seventh in his Williams, with Carlos Sainz eighth for Toro Rosso, Felipe Massa ninth and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg 10th.

Kimi Raikkonen was only 17th after he stopped on track with engine trouble.
