Oscar Pistorius has been placed under house arrest after being released from prison almost 12 months into his five-year sentence.

Last week, it was announced the double-amputee runner was cleared to move from Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in the South African capital Pretoria on Tuesday, but he was released a day early.

Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide in October 2014 after shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on February 14, 2013.

Under South African law, he had to serve a sixth of his sentence before being eligible to move to house arrest, though his potential release in August was blocked by South Africa’s justice ministry.

In a statement on Monday night, Manelisi Wolela, a spokesman for South Africa’s correctional services department, said: “Oscar Pistorius was placed under correctional supervision tonight.”

Pistorius, who won six Paralympic gold medals during his athletics career, was acquitted of murder last year but prosecutors have filed papers calling for the athlete’s conviction to be reviewed and changed to murder, which carries a minimum sentence of 15 years.
