Wigan full-back Sam Tomkins has been ruled out of England’s three-match Test Series against New Zealand through injury.

Tomkins, who made just 13 appearances in his final year with New Zealand Warriors because of a persistent knee injury, sat out England’s opening autumn international, the 84-4 rout of France at Leigh last Saturday.

He was passed fit at the squad’s training session at St George’s Park in Burton-on-Trent earlier this week but England coach Steve McNamara on Thursday revealed the player suffered a major setback in his rehabilitation and will now see a top consultant to get to the bottom of the problem.

“It is a great shame that Sam will miss the series against New Zealand,” said McNamara. “We wanted to give him every chance to confirm his fitness but it wasn’t to be.”
