Heavy rain and thunderstorms have continued to wreak havoc at this weekend’s United States Grand Prix.

Third practice was scheduled to start at 1000 local time (1600BST) on Saturday, but circuit organisers have now delayed the opening of the track until midday (1800BST) on safety grounds.

Circuit of the Americas tweeted: “For the safety of our fans and employees, today’s opening has been delayed until noon. Further updates will be forthcoming.”

Qualifying is still scheduled to take part at 1300 (1900BST) but, with the bad weather showing little sign of relenting, the session is in doubt.

If qualifying is cancelled, it is likely to be moved to Sunday morning. The second practice session on Friday was scrapped following the continued bad weather in Austin.

Lewis Hamilton will win his third Formula One championship on Sunday if he wins at the Circuit of the Americas and Sebastian Vettel, his nearest challenger, finishes third or lower.
