Trina Gulliver claimed a record-extending 10th BDO World Championship title with a 3-2 victory over Deta Hedman in the women’s final at Frimley Green.

Gulliver, who won the last of her previous nine titles in 2011, powered home 3-0 in the deciding set after twice coming from behind to square the match.

Her title-clinching double 18 in the final leg condemned English compatriot Hedman to a third defeat in a Lakeside final.

Gulliver, speaking on BBC Sport, said of her 10th success: “Finally – I’m absolutely delighted.

“It was always going to be a tough game against Deta. She wanted her first (title) and I wanted my 10th, so it was always going to be a battle.

“I was hoping for this. I’ve got the fire in my belly again.”

In the men’s event, 2013 champion Scott Waites moved within one victory of a second title as he thrashed fellow Englishman Jamie Hughes 6-1 to reach Sunday’s final.

Waites needed to dig deep in previous rounds against Geert de Vos and top seed Glen Durrant but victory did not seem in doubt this time as he raced into a 5-0 lead. Hughes did pull a set back but it did not delay Waites long.

Waites said: “That seemed a little bit more straightforward than the other two days.

“Jamie’s such a fantastic player and he didn’t perform today. Now I’ve got a 50-50 chance of winning this title again.”

Waites will take on Jeff Smith in the final after the Canadian came from behind to win a thrilling second semi-final against impressive Lakeside debutant Richard Veenstra 6-5.

Smith trailed 4-3 to the Dutchman but fought back and closed out victory with a 10-dart finish in the final leg of the deciding set.

Smith told BT Sport: “I was almost ready to fall apart there. He didn’t let me off. Every chance I thought I was going to get ahead my double didn’t go in. I’m so relieved to survive that. You’ve got to give credit to Veenstra, he was amazing.”
