Judd Trump is on course for his third Betfred World Championship semi-final appearance after dominating the best part of the morning session of his match against third seed Ding Junhui.

World number six Trump laid down a marker ahead of the tournament with victory over Ronnie O’Sullivan in the World Grand Prix final and he reproduced that form to leave Ding battling to overcome a 6-2 deficit, although the Chinese player does have some momentum.

Ding barely made an impression early on at the Crucible Theatre as Trump stormed into a 4-0 lead, underlining his dominance with a break of 94 in the fourth frame.

Trump picked up where he left off after the mid-session interval with a century break and overcame a deficit in the sixth frame to continue his stunning start.

Ding finally got off the mark in the seventh and will go into the evening session with renewed hope after holding his nerve to claim back-to-back frames.

World number 32 Anthony McGill overcame a shaky start as morning honours were shared in his last-eight tie against Shaun Murphy.

The Scot caused a major shock by beating defending champion Mark Selby in the previous round but he was little more than a spectator in the early stages on Tuesday morning.

World number eight Murphy put the qualifier on the back foot immediately with two century breaks and hit back from losing the third frame to comfortably take the fourth.

It was a different story when the players came back out after the interval as McGill found his form to win the next three frames and move into the lead for the first time.

Murphy hit back to claim the final frame of the session and leave the quarter-final evenly poised.
