Chris Woakes is set to miss England’s Test series against New Zealand after undergoing knee surgery on Wednesday.

Woakes, 26, tore his left meniscus while recovering from a foot injury sustained at the World Cup and will be out for up to six weeks.

That makes him a near certainty to miss the Tests against the Black Caps at Lord’s and Headingley on May 21 and May 29.

The five-match one-day international series, starting on June 9 and ending 11 days later, could also prove a struggle depending on how he shapes up with Warwickshire.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement read: “The ECB medical team confirms that England and Warwickshire bowler Chris Woakes underwent uncomplicated keyhole surgery on his left knee for a meniscal tear earlier today. The injury occurred while undergoing rehab for his foot injury. His rehab is likely to take a further four to six weeks.”

Woakes played three of his four Tests in the series win over India last summer, taking five wickets.
