Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff is concerned the double points on offer in the final Formula One racr of the season in Abu Dhabi could cast a shadow over his team’s phenomenal season.

Lewis Hamilton’s fifth successive victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin propelled him into a 24-point lead over team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton has now won 10 races to Rosberg’s four, b ut with 50 points on offer to the winner of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 23, Hamilton could win next Sunday’s race in Brazil yet still lose out to Rosberg in the final standings.

It is a scenario Wolff is far from happy about as he said: “I think the last race with the double points has the potential to overshadow the season.

“We know why we have double points, which made sense to make it spectacular for the audience, the fans and the viewers.

“But now we are in a situation where it could change the outcome.”

Following Mercedes’ 10th one-two of the season, equalling McLaren’s 1988 haul set by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, it is now guaranteed one of their two drivers will win the drivers’ title.

It means Mercedes are certain of the double after clinching the constructors’ championship in Russia three weeks ago.

Asked whether he could relax now, Wolff said: “Yes. It’s satisfying to know only a Mercedes driver can win the championship from now on. That’s a good feeling.

“There is one thing that makes me proud, and that’s the achievements of the team.

“As a kid I remember this dominant season of McLaren, seeing those cars scoring one-twos all the time up to a point that it was almost boring. It was just pure dominance.

“For us to equal that record, and to be able to do one or two more, is proof the team have done many things right and we have taken many good decisions.

“Normally I don’t care about statistics, but that one is something which reminds me of many years ago.”
