Yorkshire have swelled their batting ranks with the signing of veteran Pakistan international Younus Khan for the opening weeks of the county season.

The 37-year-old became the White Rose’s first overseas player from Pakistan in 2007 and will make his return to Headingley following his World Cup commitments with his country over the next couple of months.

He is in line to feature for Yorkshire when they begin the defence of their LV= County Championship title against Worcestershire, starting on Sunday April 12, and will stay on until Australia limited-overs star Aaron Finch has finished his commitments in the Indian Premier League.

“It is a great honour to be returning to Headingley and playing for Yorkshire. This is one of the finest cricket clubs in the world,” said Younus, who scored 824 runs at an average of 48.47 when he first represented the county.

“I hope my experiences in the first-class game will help them maintain their position at the top of the County Championship. The County Championship is regarded as one of the best domestic competitions in the world and to test myself in English conditions can only enhance my game.

“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and also reuniting myself with Dizzy (Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie), who I played alongside in 2007. He is a great coach and I can’t wait to work with him.”

Only Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq have scored more for Pakistan than Younus’ 8,327 runs in Tests, while he is the leading century-maker for his country with 28 hundreds.

Younus, who captained Pakistan to the 2009 World Twenty20 title, was the third highest run-scorer in Tests in 2014, which included six tons, and Yorkshire are delighted to have reacquired the services of the world renowned batsman.

The club’s Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon said: “We have been looking for a world-class batsman to strengthen our batting department at the start of the season. Younus fits the bill and will add real quality to our top-order.”
