Almost 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines are tackling a blaze which has broken out at industrial units.

One unit is completely alight while two others have been affected by the fire, which sparked more than 50 emergency calls to the fire brigade from concerned members of the public in south-east London.

While no homes have been affected London Fire Brigade has advised people living near the scene at Yarnton Way in Erith to close their doors and windows due to large volumes of smoke.

Station sanager Terry Gooding said: “We’re working hard to bring the fire under control. The blaze is in an industrial area and is not affecting any residential homes.

“There is though a lot of smoke and I’d advise local residents to close doors and windows. We are likely to be at the scene throughout the morning dealing with the blaze.”

The force said the cause of the fire, which broke out around 2am, is not yet known.
