A doctor usually deployed to major disasters was sent in to a hospital’s under-pressure A&E department as staff were forced to treat patients in the corridor, it has emerged.

The medical incident officer cared for patients at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Friday after West Midlands Ambulance Service demanded action following delays in treatment.

The Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said circumstances were “less than ideal”.

It comes on the day the NHS is to publish latest figures on A&E waiting times, having missed the Government’s target of seeing 95% of patients within four hours for the last 27 weeks consecutively.
