Former EastEnders actress Anita Dobson has swapped the Queen Vic for Queen Elizabeth for a new BBC three-part series.

Dobson will play Queen Elizabeth I in the documentary series Armada which airs on BBC 2 this spring, the corporation said.

The actress – famous as Queen Vic barmaid Angie Watts in EastEnders in the 1980s – will play a very different Elizabeth, with a pockmarked-scarred face, rotten teeth and hair falling out.

The BBC said the series will take “an intimate look at the ageing and vulnerable Elizabeth in her most private moments as she nervously awaits her fate in the battle”.

Dobson, who is married to Queen musician Brian May, is a part of British television history, thanks to her role as Angie who she played from 1985 to 1988.

The 1986 Christmas Day EastEnders episode, in which Angie divorced Den, remains the most watched UK TV broadcast of all time, with more than 30 million viewers.

On her new role, Dobson said: “Elizabeth I is a gift of a role, and one I’ve always hoped I’d get the opportunity to play.”

Historian and experienced sailor Dan Snow will also figure in the series, which features dramatic reconstruction and CGI.
