Synchronised raids have been carried out by police across England as part of a major operation to dismantle human trafficking networks.

More than 150 police officers raided 17 properties in Berkshire, Yorkshire and London following an 18-month investigation.

A number of arrests were made and victims found by officers who executed warrants at several nail bars and other properties.

Police said the victims have been taken into rest centres where they were being supported by officers, the British Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Mears, of Thames Valley Police, said: “It is a criminal offence to traffic people into the UK.

“It is an offence to force people, by threats or coercion, to work unpaid or to pay off a debt. It is an offence to make people carry out acts against their will.”
