Britain is getting ready to send troops back to Baghdad to support an American-led mission to help Iraqi security forces tackle Islamic State (IS), it was reported today.

A number of officers will join an American headquarters established to train and advise the Iraqi army and more British training teams could be sent to the semi-autonomous Kurdish north of the country, The Times said.

Ministry of Defence sources said an announcement was expected on the issue in the coming days.

The move would mark the first enduring British mission to Iraq since UK forces pulled out of the country in 2011, eight years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

The Times quoted a senior defence source as saying: “We are exploring what more can be done on training as part of a future package of support aimed at bolstering the ability (of the Iraqi military) to tackle (Islamic State).”
