The Prince of Wales has made a spoof tribute to a television presenter who suffered a meltdown when he tried to interview him in 1977.

Molly Meldrum got the jitters when Charles joined him in the studio for popular Australian music show Countdown.

He repeatedly stumbled over his words and exclaimed: “Your Royal Highness… oh, oh, I’m sweating like a pig.”

The Prince has recorded a video message as part of the show’s celebration of its 40th anniversary.

He said: ” There is an old showbusiness saying which warns never to work with animals or children, but nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum.

“Was it really 40 years ago? It only seems like yesterday. I wish it were tomorrow, I’d cancel it.”

The tongue-tied Meldrum became more anxious as the interview went on and he ended up swearing at his own mistakes.

” I certainly learned some, um, interesting new Australian words from Mr Meldrum,” Charles joked.

“And if he could have read my mind, he would have learned some interesting new English words from me.”

Recalling the interview, Meldrum said he did not regret it but admitted: “I definitely stuffed that up.”
