She may be 80 but Dame Judi Dench does not allow the words “old” or “retirement” in her house, preferring “enthusiastic”.

The star of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel said she likes to “have a go” at things, rather than being told she cannot do something, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

Dame Judi features alongside fellow screen legends Richard Gere and Dame Maggie Smith in the latest instalment of a film that celebrates life after retirement, following a group of British pensioners living in a hotel in India as they find love and self-discovery later in life.

Screen queen Dame Judi said the film reflects much of her own attitude to life.

“I don’t want to be told I can’t do something,” she told the paper’s Review. “I’ll just have a go at it and I may make a terrible mess of it but I’d sooner make a mess than not have a go at all.”

She said she does not think age matters, citing determination not to give up on things as the key, and added that as you get older you must make your own positives.

She also joked that while she may know more as the years have passed she is not sure she has become more “sensible or any more grown-up” since her younger theatre days.

Dame Judi’s latest film comes after the first release three years ago, made on a budget of just 10 million dollars (£6.5 million), raked in more than 135 million dollars (£88 million).
