Downton Abbey fans have already seen the shows, bought the box sets and even sampled the wine – now they can buy the latest spin-off with a Christmas album.

Members of the cast will feature on some recordings, along with a festive version of the ITV period drama’s theme tune, in addition to choral versions of traditional hymns and carols.

Double album Christmas At Downton Abbey will be released next month and features Elizabeth McGovern – Cora, Countess of Grantham – and Julian Ovenden, who plays Charles Blake.

McGovern already has a side career fronting her folk band Sadie and the Hotheads and they performed at Highclere Castle, the show’s location, earlier this year.

On the 45-track album her performances include It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, and she performs a duet with Ovenden on The First Noel.

McGovern said: “It was so exciting for me to have been given the opportunity to sing two songs in a totally different context to that which I’m accustomed – without my guitar, without my band. I’m very proud to be a part of this album.”

Ovenden, who has already released material in his own right as a professional singer, performs carols such as O Holy Night and Silent Night.

He said: “I’m a huge music fan and like Elizabeth I have a separate music career that runs alongside the acting. To do this album is therefore a massive honour and something I’ve really enjoyed doing.”

Jim Carter, who plays butler Charles Carson, performs a spoken word version of T’was The Night Before Christmas.

The album will come out on November 10.
