The Foreign Office is “urgently looking into” reports that eight people have been killed during a shooting in a Tunisian museum.

Seven foreigners and one Tunisian were killed in the attack, the Tunisian interior ministry said.

A UK Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are urgently looking into the serious situation in Tunisia.”

The National Bardo Museum is near the national parliament building, which was evacuated after the shooting.

The museum is a leading tourist attraction that chronicles Tunisia’s history and houses one of the world’s largest collections of Roman mosaics.

A Tunisian interior ministry spokesman said on Radio Mosaique that only one of the dead in today’s attack was a Tunisian. He did not provide nationalities for the others.
