An elderly couple are in a critical condition in hospital after a “vicious attack” in their home by a suspected burglar.

Humberside Police said officers went to the house after members of the public reported seeing a man running from the property in Elm Grove, Scunthorpe, yesterday evening.

They found the two pensioners, who are thought to be in their late 80s or 90s, with serious injuries.

A force spokesman said the couple were taken to Scunthorpe General Hospital where they are said to be in a critical condition.

Witnesses said they saw the suspect drive off in a white van following the attack at about 5.20pm.

The spokesman said; “It is believed they were assaulted by the man who was attempting to burgle them. At this time it is not known whether anything was stolen.”

Detective Inspector Jon Cross said last night: “This was a vicious attack on two elderly and vulnerable members of the community in their own home.

“At this stage they are receiving treatment in hospital for their injuries and they are both in a critical condition.

“Our investigations are ongoing and we are keen to locate the white caddy style van seen leaving the address at approximately 5.20pm today. I would urge anyone who thinks they may have seen the van at any point either prior to or after the incident was reported to contact us.”

Police said the suspect has been described as a white man, in his late 30s, about 5ft 2in and of stocky build . He was wearing a hooded top and jeans.

The address in Elm Grove has been cordoned off and crime scene investigators are examining the property.

House-to-house inquiries have been carried out in the area.

The van officers are looking for left the scene in the direction of Collum Avenue.
