The firefighters union is to hold a special conference to discuss the next move in its bitter row with the Government over pensions and retirement age, insisting that its campaign “must continue”.

The Fire Brigades Union said latest developments in its campaign will be considered at the event in Manchester on February 10, including the prospect of further industrial action.

The union has held a series of national strikes in protest at controversial changes to pensions.

The FBU executive council said in a statement that the campaign on pensions must continue, including political lobbying, possible further industrial action and demanding that Labour makes pledges to improve pension arrangements.

“This campaign continues against a background of the worst cuts experienced by our service since 1945 and while firefighters along with other public sector workers have seen living standards attacked and squeezed by Government pay policy,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, FBU members in Essex staged the final day of a three-day walkout in a row over job cuts.
