Ten fire engines are tackling a “large” house fire in central London.

London Fire Brigade is at the scene on Wimpole Street in the city.

The service tweeted: ” We are currently tackling a large house fire on Wimpole Street in central London. Ten fire engines are at the scene. More when we have it.”

The Metropolitan Police said they were called to the scene at 2am.

A spokeswoman for London Fire Brigade said people had been evacuated from the building but she did not know how many.

The Fire Brigade was called at 1.27am and the spokeswoman confirmed the fire was still not under control just after 3.30am.

“The building was occupied but nobody is hurt,” said the spokeswoman.

The service later tweeted: ” The fire on Wimpole St, Marylebone is affecting 3 storeys of a large terraced house. Crews are working hard to bring it under control.”

Pictures tweeted from the scene showed the top part of the building ablaze with fire crews using specialist equipment to tackle the flames.

A person tweeting under the name Josef said: ” Fire on Wimpole street looks pretty serious – roof alight on 5-storey terrace, hoping everyone is out of the building.”
