There were fears a mythical giant had awoken from slumber on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast today when a trail of huge footprints appeared on the beach.

But it transpired Finn McCool had not taken an early morning stroll along Portstewart Strand toward the nearby Giant’s Causeway.

The imprints were instead left by a team of Dutch sand sculptors as part of a Tourism Ireland promotional stunt.

The footsteps were the latest element of a marketing campaign to highlight Northern Ireland as the location where much of hit HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones is filmed.

Tourism Ireland, in conjunction with HBO, is organising a series of Game of Thrones-themed stunts across the region.

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with HBO in 2015, to highlight Northern Ireland and its beautiful landscape – through the exciting events of Game of Thrones – on the global stage.

“We aim to build on the success of last year’s campaign, reaching out to the show’s global fan base and to showcase the spectacular scenery of Northern Ireland. Our new campaign is a fun and innovative way to bring the destination to the attention of Game of Thrones fans worldwide.

“They will see these ads, spiking their curiosity about the landscapes and locations featured in the series and inspiring them to come and explore them for themselves.”
