Girlhood star Karidja Toure has revealed she auditioned for X-Men but lost out on the part to a Hollywood actress.

Toure, star of the much-talked about Girlhood, which is directed by Celine Sciamma, said: “I had a casting video for X-Men but they didn’t choose me.

“It was to play Storm, but they chose Alexandra Shipp. That’s normal because she’s an American actress so it’s more easy for them. I was happy that they thought of me to do the audition so maybe one day I will play Storm in X-Men.”

In an interview with director Sciamma asking her questions, she also said she’s always wanted to be an actress but couldn’t ever picture herself starring in a French movie.

She said: “I wanted to act in an American movie, because when I go to the cinema I only watch American movies because in French actresses there isn’t any black actress I can relate to or recognise myself as.

” There are no parts where I can say ‘Oh, that’s me’ that I can recognise, so for a black teenage actress in France it is sometimes difficult to take a character in a film and say ‘I will follow her in the film’.

“But when you watch American movies, you always have black actresses where you can say that ‘Oh that’s me!’ That’s why I am in love with American movies.”

Girlhood is a coming-of-age French drama, and follows Marieme, a teenager who befriends a gang of girls.

Toure was spotted on the street by the casting director for the movie.

Girlhood opens in UK cinemas on May 8.
