Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly has told how she misses working with “mentor and friend” Sir Bruce Forsyth.

The 45-year-old has taken over at the helm of the BBC show this season but says she gets weepy when she remembers their pre-recording rituals.

And she denied that she had been forced to take responsibility for listening to directions from the production team while Sir Bruce was still around.

She told the Daily Mail’s Weekend supplement: “It was never a responsibility. It was a privilege.

“I mean, just to stand by that man, it was an honour. He’s a legend. I learned so much from him.

“He was on set this week (to film a Children In Need special) and it was a joy to have him back.”

Daly added: “We always get cake and buns, and Bruce liked to have a rock cake, which we put on a special plate for him.

“We still get the cakes but there’s no plate for Bruce – and it gets me every time.”

But she was also full of praise for current co-host Claudia Winkleman.

Commenting on her shock after Winkleman’s daughter Matilda was recently hurt in a a Halloween trick-or-treat accident, Daly said: “We often have the kids in and they play together.

“The thing about Claudia – and the thing I most admire – is that she’s an incredible mother, so natural, and her kids are everything to her.

“I take my hat off to her, thinking, ‘How does she do it?’, because she has three. I only have two.”
