An inquest will open today on a six-month-old baby who was attacked by a dog while being cared for by her grandmother.

The infant, who has not yet been named by police, was pronounced dead on October 3 shortly after being injured at her mother’s home in Daventry, Northamptonshire.

Experts have established that the animal involved was an American pit bull terrier, a prohibited breed under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.

The dog was destroyed by vets at the scene of the attack in Morning Star Road, which left the baby’s maternal grandmother with bite injuries.

An inquest is due to open in Northampton today, five days after the baby’s family issued a statement describing their grief.

In their statement, the baby’s relatives said: “The family wish to say at this point that we are totally devastated and in complete shock for the tragic loss of our little princess and ask that we are left alone to grieve at this horrific time.”
